02Doorstop Appendage
2026

The project originates from a fundamentally ordinary architectural problem: the need to keep a door open. Rather than providing a standard, discrete object, the design scales this simple function into a mechanical appendage. Constructed entirely from an aggregate of off-the-shelf, utilitarian parts, the apparatus bolts together to operate as a deployable porch space.
Crucially, by maintaining its primary classification as a functional doorstop, the structure circumvents the bureaucratic requirements of a building permit. The resulting intervention acts as a pragmatic, machine-like parasite. As demonstrated in the project's visual taxonomy, the assembly is equipped with mechanical arms, ad-hoc seating, and environmental controls. Whether grounded in a suburban backyard or suspended outside a high-rise window, the appendage embraces an awkward posture. It forcefully attaches itself to the host building, utilizing radical mechanical utility to carve out a new interface, entirely indifferent to its surrounding context.
